Noh is one of Japan's most traditional arts. Its primary characteristic is its lyricism. Noh reached its height during the Tokugawa Shogunate Government (1603-1876). During this time, the feudal lords of the Kaga clan enthusiastically encouraged and supported Noh drama. As a result, Kanazawa remains a center of Noh drama. There are five schools Noh: Kanze, Hosho, Konparu, Kongo, and Kita. Kanazawa specializes in the Hosho school.

Kazue-machi Chayagai is the smallest of the three districts of preserved historic buildings. Home to mainly restaurants and tea shops, this charming area was designated as a cultural asset by the Japanese government in 2008. Also in the area and not to be missed is a collection of the phenomenal woodblock prints by late American expat artist Clifton Karhu.
